ALBUM: Ashley Nicolette Frangipane (26) er en større stjerne enn du kanskje er klar over. Hun snudde på bokstavene i fornavnet sitt og albumdebuterte for seks år siden som Halsey. Allerede året etter dukket hun opp under Nobelkonserten i Oslo - og siden har hun notert seg for både millionsalg, topp-plassering på Billboard-lista og flere milliarder strømminger. Rett før nedstengningen gjestet hun Oslo Spektrum.

Feministisk

I juli fødte Halsey for første gang, og hun omtaler den fjerde langspilleren som et konseptalbum om «gleden og skrekken ved graviditet og fødsel». Er du skikkelig fan vil du kanskje også se den timelange filmen med samme tittel som albumet, «If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power», skrevet av Halsey og regissert av Colin Tilley. Filmen vises på IMAX, Odeon i Oslo i morgen kveld.

Jomfru Maria

Albumet kan også høres som et innlegg fra en kvinne som insisterer på at hun kan være feminist sjøl om hun stiller opp toppløs i Playboy. «I Am Not a Woman, I'm a God», nærmest freser hun. Albumcoveret viser en artist som blotter den ene puppen som den naturligste ting av verden på en trone med et barn på fanget (noen velger en versjon der brystvorta skjules med en barnehånd). På Instagram har hun forklart at hun ønsker å ta tilbake sin selvstendighet og stolthet etter at hele verden har eid kroppen hennes på forskjellige måter i mange år. Det gjør selvfølgelig ingen ting om det også trigger interessen til potensielle lyttere litt ekstra.

Coveret er inspirert av malerier av Jomfru Maria og «hore og madonna»-tematikken og mer enn antyder en artist som gir blanke i alle konvensjoner og har klare råd til sine søstre: «Take what you want / take what you can / take what you please / don't give a damn / ask for forgiveness, never permission (...) it's in the blood and this is tradition» synger hun i åpningen «The Tradition» - akkompagnert av piano.

Ble foreldre - avslører babynavet «Salig» miks

Da hun jobbet med albumet «Manic» (2019), der norske LidoLido (Halseys ekskjæreste Peder Losnegård) hadde en viktig rolle, fortalte hun Rolling Stone Magazine at det ville bestå av «hiphop, rock, country, f***ing alt mulig fordi det er så manisk».

Hun har ikke «gitt bort» så mye som en eneste singel på forhånd på oppfølgeren. Country-innflytelsen er fraværende, derimot finner du trip-hop, industrirock, støyrock, punk, folk, elektronika og pop. Og mens «The Tradition» føles som en naturlig fortsettelse av «Manic», er resten av albumet atskillig mer kompleks.

Allerede i spor to, «Bells in Santa Fe», øker tempoet og instrumenteringen - i en slags miks av nettopp elektronika, punk og industrirock. Dette fortsetter i «Easier Than Lying», der Halsey minner om en uvanlig energisk Alanis Morissette (som gjestet på det forrige albumet), mens nesten-hiphopen på «Lilith» gir assosiasjoner til trip hop.

Hylles for ærlig bilde Hjemmebane

«A Girl Is A Gun» er like heftig som den er giftig («You'll be better with a nice girl, darlin'»). Enda heftigere er rocka «You Asked For This» og mindre vellykkete «The Lighthouse». Her er vi mer på hjemmebanen til produsentene Trent Reznor og Atticus Ross fra Nine Inch Nails, mens «Darling» (et «stille» høydepunkt med Fleetwood Macs Lindsey Buckingham mykt til stede på akustisk gitar) og «1121» kan plasseres i den mer dempa singer/songwriter-gata. På «Honey» dukker Dave Grohl opp på trommer.

De to produsentene har også skrevet de 13 sporene sammen med Halsey og Johnathan Carter Cunningham, og tekstene har både bibelske og seksuelle referanser. Musikalsk gir albumet et noe forvirrende inntrykk, der det hopper i flere - og kanskje for mange - retninger sjangermessig. Det føles som om de gaper over i overkant mye. Samtidig er dette Halseys mest varierte album, og hun tar flere steg i retning av å være en mer komplett artist.
